Crown do Brasil is the largest manufacturer of hot-stamping tapes (ribbbon) for painting on vehicle license plates. What is hot-stamping (ribbon)?
It is a film with a pigmented or metallized effect to be applied through thermo-mechanical transfer obtained from flat or rotating dies.
Crown do Brasil’s hot-stamping ribbon was developed so that each blank can be painted once. Other products offered on the market require two coats of paint, resulting in increased costs and loss of productivity. Ask your supplier.
Recommendations for good painting
Machines
Before starting to paint the sign, it is important that your machine is well adjusted and up to date with maintenance.
Necessary checks:
• Check that the silicone roller is in good condition and clean;
• Check that the temperature indicated on the panel is that on the roller (use a digital laser thermometer);
• Check with the machine manufacturer how many plates in sequence can be painted before the silicone roller loses temperature;
• Check that the pressure system is properly adjusted; heat the silicone roller to 190 °;
• Apply the hot-stamping film (ribbon) as instructed by the machine manufacturer;
• The hot-stamping film (ribbon) must have the correct tension when passing through the machine, check with the manufacturer for the best tension;
• Machines from different manufacturers may require specific voltage variations.
Plate
• Check that the plate was well stamped with the same edge height and alpha-number;
• Cleaning the plate before painting is extremely important, as the plate may contain impurities from the factory;
• Never use a dry cloth, this way the impurities will only be spread; do not use 46 inpm alcohol, its composition contains a lot of water and will harm the paintwork;
• Do not use ethanol or gasoline, as well as being dangerous products, they can harm the anchoring of the hot-stamping (ribbon);
• Do not use acetone, this product will damage the reflectivity of the plate and can cause stains, leaving the plate with a bad appearance;
• We recommend using 92 inpm alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, as they do not damage the reflective film and evaporate immediately.

Crown hot-stamping (ribbon) ribbons were developed so that the stamper can paint each blank only once, below are the measurements and yield of each roll:

Storage
Hot-stamping rolls (ribbon) must be stored vertically, away from high heat and humidity, in a temperature range of 10°c to 30°c and relative air humidity of 20% to 70%
Height difference between borders and alphanumerics
Solutions
• Pressure regulation of the stamping press
• Alphanumeric height adjustment
• Inspect the edge of the blank
Lack of pressure
Solutions
• Increase roller pressure on the machine
• Tip: when repainting, wait for the plate to cool and only then apply it again
Excess pressure
Solutions
• Reduce roller pressure on the machine
• Tip: to clean the smudged area, use polishing compound nº 2 while the plate is still hot, do not wait for the plate to cool down.
• Using the indicated product will prevent damage to the reflective film.
Lack of tension on the tape
Solutions
• Make sure the tape is correctly fixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions, with correct passage through the machine.
Silicone roller wear
Solutions
• It is important to check the condition of the silicone roller periodically, ask the manufacturer of your machine for instructions on how to extend its durability.
